Introduction to Year 9 Options Process

Students begin their GCSE courses in Year 10 with students submitting option requests for 4 of those courses whilst in year 9.

To ensure all students have broad base of academic subjects, the following courses are compulsory:

  • English Language
  • English Literature
  • Maths
  • Combined Science (worth two GCSEs)
  • Either Geography or History

All students must study a Humanities subject and will be asked to choose between Geography and History. It is possible to select both Humanities subjects if students are passionate about studying both.

Students will then be able to submit option requests for three other courses. Key Stage 3 subjects which learners do not take as options, will no longer be studied beyond Year 9.

Students are supported in making option requests by being guided through an Options process which begins in January of Year 9.

  1. Options Introduction Assembly from the Achievement Director for Secondary.
  2. Guidance from the Careers advisor to support students in making appropriate requests.
  3. Temple Learning Academy will host an Options Evening for parents/carers and students to provide the opportunity to gather more information for the staff who deliver the courses.
  4. Students submit option requests.
  5. Further meetings with students/parents/carers if appropriate.
  6. Confirmation of option requests
