Learning at TLA

British Values

Temple Learning Academy - 2023 (68) (1)The Secondary Phase of TLA is a powerfully diverse and inclusive learning community. We welcome students from all cultures and backgrounds – a truly global community. We proudly uphold our school values of Courage, Opportunity, Respect and Excellence.

Building on the learning all young people have had in Primary, we continue to deepen students’ understanding of the Fundamental British Values.

Our approach is not simply to ensure that students can list these values, we work hard to create a culture and community where our students live these values.

The British Values are integrated into learning experiences within our academic and PSHCE curriculum. Many of our extra-curricular experiences, trips, visits, guest speakers, assemblies and charitable work are designed to echo and enhance these values for our young people.

Importantly, we emphasise that no-matter your geopolitical identity – these are global values, that build a harmonious community for all of us to thrive together.

The five fundamental British values are democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

Overview of the Five Values

  1. Democracy: This value emphasizes the importance of democratic processes, where individuals have a voice in decision-making. It encourages participation in elections and respect for the views of others, fostering a culture of accountability and representation.
  2. The Rule of Law: This principle underlines the importance of laws in maintaining order and protecting citizens. It teaches individuals to understand their rights and responsibilities, ensuring that everyone is treated equally under the law and that justice is accessible to all.
  3. Individual Liberty: This value promotes personal freedoms and the right to make choices. It encourages individuals to express their views and beliefs freely while also understanding the importance of exercising these rights responsibly and safely.
  4. Mutual Respect: This principle fosters an environment where individuals respect each other's rights and opinions, regardless of differences. It is essential for creating a harmonious society where diverse perspectives are valued.
  5. Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs: This value encourages acceptance and understanding of various cultures, religions, and beliefs. It promotes peaceful coexistence and the celebration of diversity within society.

Our approach is not simply to ensure that students can list these values, we work hard to create an culture and community where our students live these values.
