Excellence as Scholars (Year 10 and Year 11)
To support our KS4 students with the vital study skills required to maximise the success of their GCSE courses, the Excellence Session
is a daily opportunity to develop study skills and engage in quality subject master classes. All students follow a targeted programme of study skills support, following a well-planned teaching sequence across the key stage. Students are explicitly taught about memory, learning and study habits, time and task management, prioritisation as well as the critical skills to manage their wellbeing and exam related stress. This is woven through the key stage. All the study strategies taught to students are then mirrored by staff in all subjects allowing for that consistent approach.
Alongside this is a cycle of subject specific master classes delivered by students own subject teachers which allow key learning and revision points to be delivered in short and snappy targeted sessions. As well as larger group revision, some students experience 1-2-1 and small group support in this time to ensure they are making the progress they need towards GCSE success.
What do our students think?
‘I like that it is short and snappy recall, especially prior to our exams’
‘I like that we have a routine of a week at a time per subject, because we actually cover loads of recall and revision in the 25 minutes each day, by the end of the week’
‘It’s good that it is different content to what we are covering in lessons so it forces us to dig in our memories for last years or last terms learning’
‘It’s good that it has a more relaxed approach compared to full 1 hour lessons and the quick recall is really useful to keep reminding us of old learning’
