Reading
At Temple Learning Academy, we support children to become confident fluent readers with a lifelong love of reading
Early reading, EYFS and Key Stage 1
Children begin learning to read using a scheme called 'Read, Write Inc'. This begins in Reception and continues throughout KS1 with additional phonics intervention offered in KS2.
'Read, Write Inc' is a systematic synthetic phonics method of learning centred around letter sounds.
During a Read Write Inc lesson, children will:
- be taught in groups matched to their sound knowledge
- learn 44 sounds and the corresponding graphemes (written letter/s used to represent the sound)
- use simple picture prompts to aid their sound knowledge
- learn to read words using sound blending
- read stories featuring words they have learned to sound out or recognise
- answer comprehension questions with an adult based on the texts they have read in their phonics lessons
- take home a reading book based on their phonetic knowledge
Below you will find details of the RWI scheme for parents and carers.
Also in KS1, children will access a wide range of books through the curriculum, daily story time and availability of different book genres in classrooms for the children to enjoy. Having invested in books for the school primary library we are committed to encouraging children to develop a love of reading.
Reading in Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, children are taught through daily English lessons and guided reading sessions, alongside additional 1:1 and group reading interventions where appropriate. Throughout primary our goal is to encourage independence, fluency, resilience and stamina so that our readers apply their skills across the curriculum. Our children are given the opportunity to read aloud in all lessons. All adults in school are engaged in hearing individuals read, modelling thinking, asking a wide range of questions using our Temple Learning Academy Reading Vipers (see below). Independent reading for pleasure sessions focus on instilling a love of reading in all our pupils. This session is separate to our guided reading sessions and enables our children to read a text of their own choosing.
All Temple Learning Academy Readers:
- Have access to our school library once per week and borrow a book of their choice.
- Have access to a break time reading library and the Little Free Library.
- Can participate in half termly book swap shops.
- Celebrate World Book Day annually.
- Use quality home/school reading records to support the communication between home and school.
